Chief Operating Officer - System

Joseph Bernard began his career in healthcare management in 2005 with Health Management Associates (HMA), Inc., as the Associate Administrator at Lehigh Regional Medical Center in Lehigh Acres, Florida. He then served as the Associate Administrator at Charlotte Regional Medical Center in Punta Gorda, Florida, and was subsequently promoted to Chief Operating Officer at Peace River Regional Medical Center in Port Charlotte, Florida. In 2008, Mr. Bernard became the Chief Operating Officer at Physicians Regional Medical Center-Collier Blvd in Naples, Florida and subsequently transitioned to his current role in December 2011.
Prior to joining HMA, Mr. Bernard served in the United States Marine Corps primarily as a helicopter pilot. He retired at the rank of lieutenant colonel after more than 22 years of service.
Mr. Bernard is responsible for overall hospital operations and service line development, and he oversees ancillary and support departments throughout the healthcare system.
Mr. Bernard has a Master of Arts degree in management from Webster University and a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering from the University of Massachusetts-Lowell. He is currently pursuing a Master of Healthcare Administration degree through the University of Cincinnati. Mr. Bernard is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives and the Military Officers Association of America. He has served on the Executive Leadership Team (past chairman) of the American Heart Association's Collier County Heart Walk and is a former board member of both the Economic Development Council and the Physician Led Access Network. He currently serves on the board of the YMCA of the Palms, volunteers with Junior Achievement and is a member of the Public Safety Authority. Mr. Bernard is a graduate of the Leadership Collier Program, Class of 2011.
