Physicians Regional Awarded Center of Excellence in Lung Cancer Screening

Physicians Regional has been named a Center of Excellence in Lung Cancer Screening by a national organization, recognizing the health system’s commitment to early detection of lung cancer through low-dose CT screening.
Physicians Regional joined the Center of Excellence network with GO2 for Lung Cancer, an advocacy group dedicated to increasing survival for those at risk for, diagnosed with and living with lung cancer.
An estimated 237,000 Americans are diagnosed with lung cancer annually, with many being found at an advanced stage of the disease. As a result, lung cancer has long been the leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S. Screening individuals at high risk for lung cancer using low-dose computed tomography can change that, however.
“Low-dose CT screening is currently the only proven method to detect lung cancer at the earliest, most treatable stage,” said Scott Lowe, Physicians Regional Healthcare CEO. “We are thrilled to be part of this elite group, setting an example for responsible screening practices across the country.”
GO2 for Lung Cancer helps knowledge sharing and collaboration among healthcare organizations, including community hospitals and academic medical centers. The Center of Excellence designation recognizes Physicians Regional’s commitment to providing patient-centered, evidenced-based lung cancer screenings based on clinical guidelines.
A lung cancer screening is recommended for those who meet the following criteria:
- Age 50-80
- Must be asymptomatic (no signs or symptoms of lung cancer)
- A smoking history of 20 pack-years
- Either a current smoker or have quit smoking within the last 15 years
- Have an order from your physician or qualified non-physician practitioner
Both Physicians Regional hospital locations - Collier Blvd and Pine Ridge - are designated as Lung Cancer Screening Centers by the American College of Radiology.
