Pelvic Floor Therapy
What is Pelvic Floor Dysfunction?
The pelvic floor is a group of muscles that act as a sling to support the pelvic organs: the bladder, rectum, uterus in women and prostate in men. These muscles also assist in stabilizing your core.
When these muscles and connective tissues don’t work as they should, this can lead to symptoms such as:
- Frequent urination or an urgent need to go to the bathroom
- Urinary leakage
- Constipation
- Fecal leakage
- Pain during intercourse
- Pelvic pain or pressure
- Tailbone, lower back or hip pain
How Can Pelvic Therapy Help
Pelvic floor dysfunction is common, but you don’t have to live with the symptoms. Our team can help you identify your issues and optimize your pelvic floor with a customized treatment plan.
Pelvic floor therapy is a non-surgical solution that may include:
- Individualized pelvic floor exercises addressing strength, endurance, coordination and flexibility
- Core strengthening exercises
- Myofascial release and soft tissue mobilization to help reduce muscle pain and release scar tissue
- Biofeedback to improve muscle contraction and relaxation
- Electrical stimulation for awareness and re-education of the pelvic floor muscles, easing pelvic pain or reducing bladder spasms
- Vaginal dilator training to assist patients with insertional pain
- Joint mobilization
- Relaxation techniques
- Lifestyle modifications and self-care education

What Can I Expect?
During your first visit you will have the opportunity to share your history and concerns. We will discuss the exam so you can have any questions answered right away. Your exam may include assessment of your hips, abdominals and thorax. If pelvic rehabilitation is necessary, an assessment of your pelvic floor muscles internally (through the vaginal canal or rectum) may be valuable. You will have the opportunity to choose or refuse any part of the examination or treatment based on your comfort level.
